Solid state chemistry of oxides: some properties and applications

Título: Solid state chemistry of oxides: some properties and applications

Ponente: Anthony R. West, Universidad de Sheffield

Fecha: Jueves, 24 de mayo

Hora: 11:30 h

Lugar: Salón de Grados del cicCartuja 2

Abstract:

The talk will focus on the common occurrence of a variablemetal-oxygen ratio in many inorganic oxides and its consequences for adiverse range of electrical properties and applications. Comparisonswill be made between the occurrence of non–stoichiometry in manyoxides and the exact stoichiometry of molecular compounds. In somecases, oxygen in oxides is more than just an inert O2- packing ion ina crystal structure, but can take part in redox processes similar totransition metal cations. Topics covered in the talk should include:lithium battery cathodes, black rutile, p-n transitions in oxideceramics and memristive switching phenomena, to illustrate theunderlying physical processes responsible for the diverse range ofproperties.

Biografía

Tony West obtained his PhD at the University of Aberdeen, where heworked with Professor F. P. Glasser on silicate chemistry. He wasappointed as a Lecturer in Aberdeen in 1971 and developed a lifetimeinterest in the then-emerging field of solid state chemistry withspecial interest in the synthesis of new oxide materials, theircrystal structures and electrical properties. He was awarded a DScfrom Aberdeen in 1984 and rose through the ranks to become Professorof Chemistry in 1989 before moving to the University of Sheffield,Department of Materials Science and Engineering, as Head of Departmentin 1999, a post he held until 2007.

Tony was founding editor of the Journal of Materials Chemistry andsubsequently established the Materials Chemistry Forum, which has nowbecome the Materials Chemistry Division of the Royal Society ofChemistry. He organised the First International Conference onMaterials Chemistry, MCI, in Aberdeen, 1993, and co-organised thefirst Materials Discussion, MDI, in Bordeaux, 1998. He also served asPresident of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC, 2004–2007.

Tony is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute ofPhysics, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and theRoyal Society of Edinburgh. Over the years he has received severalawards, including an Industrial Award in Solid State Chemistry fromthe RSC (1996), the Griffiths Medal and Prize from the IOM3 (2008),the Epsilon de Oro Award from the Spanish Society of Glass andCeramics (2007) and the Chemical Record Lectureship from the ChemicalSocieties of Japan (2009). He has been awarded the 2013 John B.Goodenough Award in Materials Chemistry by the RSC, a lifetime awardwhich recognises exceptional and sustained contributions to the fieldof materials chemistry.

He has >450 research publications and best-selling books on solidstate chemistry.
