Probiotic fertilizers to reduce environmental damage in Doñana

A research team from the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis, belonging to cicCartuja, has just started a research project funded by the Technological Corporation of Andalusia (CTA) in collaboration with the cooperative Agroquivir SCA. This project is based on the development of formulations containing atmospheric nitrogen-fixing microorganisms, native to the Guadalquivir marshes.

The objective is the creation of new probiotic fertilizers, for use in cotton and rice crops in the marshes of the Lower Guadalquivir. It is hoped that the use of these new probiotic fertilizers will mitigate the environmental impact on the Doñana National Park of the current extensive cropping techniques based on the use of nitrogen fertilizers. These new fertilizers will help improve soil conservation from the point of view of soil fertility and biodiversity.

The team of researchers is led by doctors Vicente Mariscal and Fernando Publio Molina, both attached to the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis. In the photo below, both (second and third from the left) pose with the rest of the members of the research team in a laboratory at cicCartuja.
