The Scientific Research Center “Isla de la Cartuja” (cicCartuja) is a non-profit public institution, whose main objective is the creation of knowledge and the improvement of the quality of life of citizens through scientific and technical research.
Located in the Science and Technology Park of Seville (PCT Cartuja), and founded in 1995 by agreement of the Andalusian Regional Government, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Seville (US), cicCartuja houses three joint institutes of the CSIC and the US:

IBVF
Instituto de Bioquímica Vegetal y Fotosíntesis

ICMS
Instituto de Ciencias de Materiales

IIQ
Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas
The cicCartuja is the result of the union of three institutes. The first of these, the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (IBVF), was founded more than half a century ago by one of our distinguished Andalusians: Manuel Losada Villasante, the first Prince of Asturias prize winner in Andalusia. The second of these is the prestigious Institute of Materials Sciences of Seville (ICMS), founded in 1986. Lastly, the youngest, but no less relevant, is the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ).
As there is strength in numbers, these three institutes decided to go further more than 25 years ago. Not only did they group together around the cicCartuja, promoting the multidisciplinary nature of their research, but they also chose a space for their location that would ensure that the synergies created among them would have a multiplying effect.
With the effort and contribution of all of us who make up this Center, we have continued to grow, evolve, contribute and place ourselves in a privileged position to look forward to the future. The support of all the staff that is part of cicCartuja and the continuous support of the Institutions co-owners of the Center, the State Agency CSIC, the University of Seville and the Andalusian Regional Government, will allow us to continue building and taking this wonderful project as far as possible.
cicCartuja researchers work in different but close scientific areas, on the border between biology, chemistry and physics, which facilitates the approach of projects from different points of view and with complementary methodologies. The interdisciplinary character is, precisely, the most unique feature of cicCartuja, its greatest particularity among centers of its nature. Likewise, the mixed composition of the three Institutes, with personnel from the CSIC and the US, allows cicCartuja to develop postgraduate activities at the forefront of scientific discovery.
The operation and organization of the center is regulated by an agreement signed in May 2022 by the three institutions co-owning the center, which replaces the one signed in 1996.
