Rafael Álvarez Molina, distinguished by the Spanish Association of Scientists

At the public ceremony held in Madrid on November 27, 2014, Dr. Rafael Álvarez Molina received the AEC-2014 Honor Plaque in recognition of his merits as a young scientist. The Governing Board of the Spanish Association of Scientists has decided to award him the award for his international contributions in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology throughout his research career.

Rafael’s work focuses on the development of “tailor-made” nanomaterials for the development of advanced technological applications. In his research, he combines computer simulation with the performance of fundamental experiments to analyze atomic assembly at the nanoscale. The procedures he develops in his laboratory can be used in the manufacture of a large number of materials with applications for the environmental and biomedical industries, among others. He is also the co-inventor, along with other researchers, of several patents in the area of biomedicine and photovoltaic cells, and is also the author of different computer programs specialized in the study of nanomaterials.

The results of his studies have earned him international recognition in a multitude of scientific publications, which have been highlighted in numerous European and American media outlets. Dr. Álvarez is a researcher attached to the Surface Nanotechnology Group of the Materials Science Institute of Seville, part of the Isla de la Cartuja Scientific Research Centre.
