Gabriel Lozano, winner of the 2013 Royal Cavalry Research Award

Gabriel Sebastián Lozano Barbero receives one of the two 2013 Young Researcher Awards from the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla. Gabriel currently works as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Multifunctional Optical Materials group of the Materials Science Institute of Seville, belonging to cicCartuja. He has more than 27 articles in the highest indexed journals within his specialty and more than two hundred and fifty citations; as well as three transferred patents.

In his first works, the award winner addressed the study of fundamental questions that affect self-assembled photonic crystals, analyzed the optical response of porous interference filters and developed an analytical model to determine the optical response of these nanostructured materials. During his postdoctoral stay in the Netherlands, he focused on the emission properties of different light sources coupled to ordered metallic nanostructures, which led him to demonstrate a significant increase in the performance of light-emitting devices using nanostructured materials. These advances have allowed the award winner to propose technologically relevant solutions in the field of lighting devices that are being explored by the industry.

The public ceremony for the 2013 Young Researcher Awards is scheduled to take place at the Casa de la Real Maestranza de Caballería in Seville on June 17, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.
