The Centro de Investigaciones Científicas Isla de la Cartuja (cicCartuja) will host from November 12 to 16 various activities of an informative nature, framed in the Week of Science and Technology. In this twelfth edition, the cicCartuja program will revolve around three main axes: the “Science for a sustainable world” lectures, the explanatory talks and guided tours of the Center, and the scientific photography exhibition “Electron microscopy: an art in itself”, coordinated by the Al-Nanofunc Network. In each of these activities, cicCartuja will bring scientific culture closer to secondary school students, with the purpose of expanding the contents of the subject “Science for a contemporary world”; with the exception of “Science for a sustainable world”, whose conferences are open to a general public, not specialized in scientific matters.
“Science for a sustainable world”. A new feature of this edition of Science Week at cicCartuja is the activity “Science for a sustainable world”, in which two researchers from the Center will give talks open to the general public, who are not familiar with scientific issues. The talks will be framed within the contents of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, and will deal with specific aspects of biology and materials science, which will be treated from an ecological perspective. During the afternoon of November 13, scientists José Antonio Navarro (IBVF) and Juan Pedro Holgado (ICMS), both with proven track records, will address the “Influence of metals in the evolution of photosynthesis” and “Eco-sustainable chemistry”, respectively; lectures that may be of special interest to university students and also to secondary and high school teachers who wish to obtain new tools to improve the teaching of science and ecology.
Lectures and guided tours. The central core of the activities proposed by cicCartuja for the Science Week will be the explanatory talks and guided tours that will take place between November 12 and 15. During these days, several school groups will visit the center to learn about the studies carried out in its three institutes: the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (IBVF), the Institute of Materials Science (ICMS) and the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ). Six cicCartuja scientists will give lectures on photosynthesis and its biotechnological applications, the use of microalgae in aquaculture, “green” or sustainable chemistry, the physical properties of light and color, new drugs and the relevance of basic research in today’s world.
After the lectures, the students will be able to visit the cicCartuja facilities, where they will discover the work carried out in the laboratories. The students will also receive the cicCartuja: Encounters with Science, now in its fourth edition. This publication contains the contents of the six lectures held during the Science Week, useful for both students and teachers, who will find in these texts the contents of the subject “Science for the contemporary world”.
