‘Your future is science’ is the slogan chosen by the Centro de Investigaciones Científicas Isla de la Cartuja to participate in the 9th Seville Science Fair from 12 to 14 May. The cicCartuja will encourage scientific vocation and promote research as a commitment to the future at four stands, where experiments and informative explanations will be given on different aspects of science. Through demonstrative and interactive activities, the three Institutes that make up cicCartuja will show young people the physical, chemical and biological processes that are carried out at the Centre, with the aim of attracting them to research as a possible career path and as an important resource for society and the economy.
The Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (IBVF) will showcase its day-to-day work through a series of activities under the title ‘Photosynthesis and biodeversity’, which will highlight the wide variety of life forms that populate our planet. For its part, the Institute of Materials Science of Seville (ICMS) will present the basic concepts of light and the effect of diffraction of light on matter with the activity entitled ‘Light and matter’. Meanwhile, the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ) will carry out various experiments (with nylon threads, elastic polymers, invisible inks or liquid nitrogen) to commemorate the ‘International Year of Chemistry’, which is being celebrated in 2011.
Precisely, chemistry will be one of the main themes at the 9th Science Fair (along with forests and numbers), given its importance in daily life and its influence on other fields of knowledge. The cicCartuja will have its stands in an area close to that of other CSIC centres, within the Pavilion of the Future on the Isla de la Cartuja.
