Seville, 9 May 2016. On 6 May, cicCartuja presented the fourth edition of the Future Scientists Award during the 14th Science Fair, which took place from 5 to 7 May at the Seville Exhibition and Congress Centre. The general aim of this award is to foster scientific vocations and promote students’ interest in research and, specifically, to highlight talented young people, their teachers and their centres, publicising their achievements and encouraging them to continue their participation in the field of science and technology.
The award is €500 for the best scientific outreach project presented at the Fair’s stands, and two second prizes of €250 were also awarded. Students will also be invited to present their projects to cicCartuja scientists and the general public during the Future Scientists Conference, which will be held during Science Week in November 2016.
After visiting the stands and evaluating all the projects presented by the Secondary and High School centres, the jury, made up of cicCartuja researchers Juan Pedro Holgado (ICMS), Juan Manuel Benito (IIQ) and José Mª Ortega (IBVF), agreed that the winners are:
Leguvicar: a very nutritious cooperative (IES La Puebla, Vícar, Almería) – 1st prize
Coinciding with the International Year of Legumes, the project revolves around this food. Taking into account that the rate of adolescent obesity has increased in our country, the aim is to promote a healthy life through the consumption of legumes. Furthermore, this work offers a broad and ongoing line of research, and proposes to learn about the entire process of obtaining food, from planting in the field until it is eaten at the table.
Smart house, sustainable house (San Antonio María Claret School, Seville) – Runner-up 1
The project of this educational center is linked to robotics, since it is entertaining and easily accessible for students, guaranteeing their interactivity with the different projects and works. Participants will discover that developing, building and programming different actuators and devices is accessible to a wide range of ages.
Attracted by science (IES María Inmaculada, Seville) – Runner-up 2
Electromagnetism is the protagonist of this work, since it is, has been and will be the basis of many technological advances, such as the engine, railway transport or medical techniques such as magnetic resonance.
The jury also agreed that there would be six finalist projects, which are the following:
— Sports and Science, Consciously (Educational Foundation Christian Doctrine, Seville)
