El ICMS brings science closer to citizens during Science Week

The Institute of Materials Science of Seville leads the project We bring you Science, which aims to awaken curiosity about knowledge, scientific research, increase scientific vocations and break stereotypes about the scientific community.

Reducing wear with nanomaterials: divide and conquer
Scientific breakfast with a researcher who will present this research topic and talk about his scientific career. We will first learn about his professional career so that students can prepare questions for the researcher.
Researcher: Juan Carlos Sánchez-López (ICMS)
Place: San Jerónimo Library
Date and time: November 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.
Recipients: school groups from 2nd Cycle of ESO and 1st year of Baccalaureate.

Diamond, graphite and graphene, are they related?
Workshop where simple chemistry and physics experiments will be carried out on the topic to be discussed. Participation in a competition will be proposed, which will consist of writing a micro-story about the workshop carried out.
Researcher: Rosalía Poyato Galán (ICMS)
Place: San Jerónimo Library
Date and time: November 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
Recipients: school groups from 2nd and 3rd Cycle of Primary. Scheduled session

Cultural Center Library of Montequinto

Talk-colloquium ‘Photonic materials: nanotechnology for light control’
This activity will deal with topics of high social impact and current scientific interest, specifically photovoltaic devices for solar cells and light-emitting devices will be discussed.
Researcher: Mauricio Calvo scientist (ICMS)
Date and time: November 13, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.
Recipients: general public: adults, adolescents and young people

Science workshop ‘Materials for the environment and energy’
Based on the demonstration of simple experiments, which will include a brief explanation of the process used, the active participation of children in the workshop will be promoted to carry out the experiments, related to catalytic materials used in processes related to energy and the environment. Later, they will be told about the impact that the experiment and scientific activity itself has on society.
Researcher: Juan Pedro Holgado (ICMS)
Date and time: November 15, at 7:00 p.m.
Recipient: family audience with children from 8 years old.

Scientific breakfasts: ‘Nanomaterials: much more than miniaturisation’ and ‘Can we have customised ceramics by manipulating the nanoworld?’
The scientists will spend 10-15 minutes explaining their research topic within a framework that is easily recognisable to the public and will talk to the students about their research and scientific careers.
Researchers: Juan Ramón Sánchez (ICMS) and Rosalía Poyato (ICMS)
Date and time: 16 November, at 10:00 am.
Target audience: activity organised with students in the second cycle of compulsory secondary education and 1st year of high school.
