With the aim of spreading scientific culture, the Congress of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) has programmed the informative activity “Biochemistry in the street”, open to all citizens who are interested in learning about two current topics of social interest, such as functional foods and cancer. Coordinated by Professor José M. Vega, the conferences will be given at the Cajasol Cultural Center and at the Real Maestranza de Caballería by the prestigious scientists Francisco García Olmedo (Polytechnic University of Madrid), Daniel Ramón Vidal (CSIC-Valencia), Joan Massagué Solé (Sloan-Kettering Institute of New York) and Carlos López Otín (University of Oviedo).
The Congress of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which will be attended by some 2,500 people, will take place for the first time in Spain since the IUBMB was founded in 1955. Among the parallel activities of the Congress is the event “Biochemistry in the street”, which aims to bring various scientific topics closer to a non-specialized public, so that they can be appreciated in a fluid way. The aim is to highlight the importance of research in our daily environment, understanding it as a necessary engine to find a new economic and social model based on knowledge.
The first of the “Biochemistry in the street” conferences is entitled “Functional foods: health and aging” and will be given by Professors Francisco García Olmedo and Daniel Ramón Vidal on September 6 at the Cajasol Cultural Center, located on Calle Laraña; while the second conference, “Cancer: new knowledge and treatments”, will be given by Professors Joan Massagué Solé and Carlos López Otín, and will be held at the Salón de Carteles de la Real Maestranza de Caballería, located on Paseo Colón. These events will try to project a vision of science close to the citizens or, in other words, an image of biochemistry capable of solving health problems and, in short, capable of improving social welfare.
