Researchers from the Institute of Materials Science of Seville (ICMS) Rosa Pereñíguez and Manuel Macías have been awarded the popular vote prize and the jury prize, respectively, in the 1st Al-NanoPhoto Scientific Photography Contest “Electron Microscopy: an art in itself”. This contest, organized by the group responsible for the international project Al-NanoFunc, was organized with the intention of showing the beauty hidden in microparticles and, therefore, with the purpose of publicizing the studies carried out in the field of nanomaterials, through images and informative texts.
The prize for the popular vote, carried out through the Al-NanoFunc website, went to the work “Green catalysis”, by Rosa Pereñíguez. It is an image that relates science and art, in which a material is captured in the form of powder, prepared for its application in environmental catalysis. The jury’s prize went to the photograph entitled “Nanoanemone”, by Manuel Macías. This micrograph shows a bunch of nanofibers with a distribution similar to that of an underwater anemone. Both researchers – awarded with a Kindle Fire e-book – have been recognized for the originality, artistic quality and technique of their images, as well as for the scientific content and informative description they have provided in their work.
Likewise, the jury’s prize consisted of two runners-up prizes, awarded with accredited diplomas. The first of these runner-up prizes went to Mariana Paladini for her photograph “Campos de trigo”, while the second went to Alejandro Nicolás Filippin for his work entitled “Tango”, which evokes the image of two intertwined dancers. Both researchers are also linked to the Institute of Materials Science of Seville (ICMS).
The jury also awarded a special mention for the informative nature of their texts to ICMS researchers Manuel Oliva, for his work “Strange constructions on the microscale”; and María Alcaire, for “A Pompeii on a nanometric scale”.
Coinciding with the celebration of Science Week, these photographs are on display in the hall of cicCartuja, together with 26 other images that participated in the contest “Electron microscopy: an art form”. According to the organizers, the exhibition will have an itinerant character and will visit other centers in the coming dates, with the aim of extending these works in different scientific and university environments. Its first outing will take place at the Center for Research, Technology and Innovation of the University of Seville (CITIUS) from November 26.
