Miguel García Guerrero, cicCartuja scientist, new director of the Fundación General CSIC

The President of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and its Foundation, Emilio Lora-Tamayo, has appointed the scientist Miguel García Guerrero (Campillos, Málaga, 1948), as Director General of the Fundación General CSIC. Attached to the CSIC since 1975, Miguel García Guerrero has been a member of its research staff and has held various institutional positions in the organisation.

With a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Seville, García Guerrero has been Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at this university since 1986. During his scientific career, he has addressed various facets of photosynthesis, through basic and applied lines of research, and has achieved important scientific-technical advances that have consolidated his prestige and national and international recognition.

Scientist and manager

After completing his university studies, he completed his training as a postdoctoral researcher at the Vennesland Research Centre of the Max-Planck Foundation, Berlin, Germany (1974-76; 1980). He held the positions of Director of the Department of Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Seville, of the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (a joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Seville) and of the Isla de la Cartuja Scientific Research Centre (a joint centre of the CSIC, the University of Seville and the Andalusian Regional Government). Between 1996 and 2001, he was Vice-President for Organisation and Institutional Relations of the CSIC. He currently chairs its Ethics Committee.

He has extensive research experience in photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism and microalgae biotechnology.The results of his work have been published in more than a hundred prestigious specialised publications and have given rise to several patents, some of which have been licensed by Spanish companies.He is an advisor and scientific reference for the Spanish company AlgaEnergy, a technology-based company in the microalgae biotechnology sector. García Guerrero has supervised more than ten doctoral theses and has co-authored three books. Among other awards, he holds the Encomienda de la Orden del Mérito Civil and the Encomienda con placa de la Orden de Alfonso X El Sabio. He is a full member of the Real Academia Sevillana de Ciencias.
