IBVF researchers participate in the CO2Algaefix project

Mercedes García and Francisco Javier Florencio, both researchers at the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis, are participating as experts in the course “Cultivation and valorisation of microalgae”. The course is organised within the framework of the European project CO2Algaefix, which is part of the LIFE+ programme of the Directorate General for the Environment of the European Union and is led by the company Algaenergy.

This seminar, which will be held from 9 to 13 September at the UNIA Cartuja headquarters, offers a complete and up-to-date overview of the latest advances in research, production and applications of microalgae, while also providing notions of genetic engineering, a novel aspect of great interest to young researchers.

The main objective of CO2Algaefix is to study the technical and economic feasibility of a process of biological capture and bio-fixation of CO2 using microalgae in an industrial power generation plant, which will mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while obtaining value-added products such as biogas, fertilizers, animal feed and cosmetic products.
