Once again this year, the Isla de la Cartuja Scientific Research Centre (cicCartuja) will be developing several initiatives aimed at the dissemination and popularisation of science at the 2016 Science Fair. The event will once again be held at the Seville Exhibition and Congress Centre (FIBES) on 5, 6 and 7 May 2016.
The main topics of this edition are climate change, legumes, camelids, robotics and new technologies. The three research institutes that make up the cicCartuja centre will each have a stand where live scientific demonstrations and explanations can be seen.
The Chemical Research Institute has decided to focus on Climate Change and how the use of Chemical Technologies constitutes an essential tool to combat this problem and at the same time achieve sustainable development. They will also provide some examples that will help us understand how Chemistry promotes scientific, technological and social progress based on the principles of sustainable development.
The Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis will recreate a real laboratory with which visitors will be able to interact and carry out simple experiments to extract photosynthetic pigments from leaves. It will also show a series of photosynthetic organisms (cyanobacteria and plants) capable of fixing nitrogen, as well as scale models of reactors for growing photosynthetic microorganisms with biotechnological uses.
The Institute of Materials Science will focus on explaining how plasma technology has become an excellent tool from an environmental point of view and an excellent ally for applications related to agriculture, biology and medicine.

cicCartuja Award for Future Scientists
A jury made up of four prestigious scientists from cicCartuja will be in charge of awarding a prize of €500 to the best scientific outreach project presented at the stands of the 2016 Seville Science Fair by students from secondary and high school centres, and two second prizes of €250. A cheque for the value of the prize will be presented in the name of the educational centre, for activities and/or educational material for the winning groups, in the opinion of the project coordinators.
In addition, students will be invited to present their projects to cicCartuja scientists and the general public during the Future Scientists Day, which is held during Science Week in November 2016.
