In recent days, Javier Ramos’ work has been recognized with two awards: one national, awarded by the Governing Board of the specialized group on Carbohydrates of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (GE-HIC-RSEQ), for the Best Doctoral Thesis of the year 2017 on carbohydrates, and another territorial, awarded by the Governing Board of the Territorial Section of Western Andalusia of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (STAO-RSEQ), as one of the best Doctoral Theses defended during the Academic Year 2016-2017 in the field of Chemistry. Javier Ramos Soriano completed his doctoral thesis at the Institute of Chemical Research, part of cicCartuja, under the supervision of Drs. Javier Rojo and José Juan Reina, whose defense was held on April 6, 2017.
The Doctoral Thesis is entitled “Glycodendritic systems as tools in biomedicine”, and its fundamental objective is the construction of new hybrid and versatile platforms based on click chemistry. In this way, it is intended to obtain in a very efficient way complex structures that allow the multivalent presentation of different types of biomolecules for different therapeutic uses.
These glycodendritic systems have been designed to address the study of biological processes in the field of biomedicine such as the modulation of the immune response in allergic processes or the increase in the interaction with the DC-SIGN lectin, being capable of inhibiting infection processes.
Both awards not only recognize the quality of the thesis presented, but also the candidate’s scientific career, as well as the merits derived from his/her Doctoral Thesis.
Acceptance of the GE-HIC-RSEQ award entailed participation in the Award Ceremony at the 29th International Carbohydrate Symposium held from 15 to 19 July 2018 in Lisbon where an Invited Oral Communication was given.
Acceptance of the STAO-RSEQ award will entail a brief oral presentation by the winners on the results of their research at a venue of the University of Seville. The date and programme of the event will be announced shortly.
