Dr. Noureddine leads project for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, scientists around the world are making significant efforts to find an efficient treatment and a vaccine.

Considering the current situation, an economical and effective therapeutic strategy consists of reusing existing drugs that have shown positive effects on coronaviruses in general and on SARS CoV-2 in particular.

The proposal of Noureddine Khiar’s project, funded by the CSIC, is part of this path. It proposes the incorporation of multiple antivirals into the internal cavity of biocompatible nanomaterials to take advantage of synergistic inhibitory effects against SARS CoV-2 and prevent future resistance. Additionally, the proposed nanosystems will be decorated with specific ligands of the viral spike protein, in order to selectively reach and kill SARS-CoV-2.
