The Minister of Knowledge and Universities visits cicCartuja

On February 12, Mr. Rogelio Velasco, Minister of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Andalusian Government, visited the center.

The Minister held a meeting with researchers from the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (IBVF), the Institute of Materials Science of Seville (ICMS) and the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ) who have obtained a postdoctoral contract to return to these institutes from the research centers abroad where they were training.

The new recruits are part of a total of 257 young PhD researchers who have been joining the nine public universities in Andalusia and 28 public research centres in the region since the beginning of the year, through the €32 million grant awarded by the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities, whose objective is to attract and retain talent, young but already trained researchers so that they can provide added value and research excellence in our autonomous community.

The authorities with the new hires

Mr. Rogelio Velasco had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the projects that the new hires will be working on and which they will develop in research groups at the centre with a broad and recognised scientific track record.

The councillor was accompanied, among other authorities, by Ms. Rosa Ríos, general secretary of Universities, Research and Technology, Mr. Miguel Ángel Castro, rector of the University of Seville, Ms. Margarita Paneque, institutional delegate of the CSIC in Andalusia, Mr. Javier Rojo, director of the cicCartuja, Mr. Francisco Javier Cejudo Fernández, director of the IBVF, Mr. Juan Pedro Espinós Manzorro, director of the ICMS and Mr. Noureddine Khiar el Wahabi, director of the IIQ.

Later, he was able to visit some of the centre’s most important scientific facilities, where he learned about its equipment and some of the lines of research that are being developed.

The cicCartuja researchers who have obtained a new postdoctoral contract are Mercedes Nieves, from the IBVF; Laura Calió, Juan Jesús Arcenegui, Manuel Oliva, from the ICMS; Laura Corrales, Julía Álvarez, Juan José Moreno, Miguel Navarro Blasco. Fco. Javier Ramos Serrano and José Alberto Carmona, from the IIQ.

The new hires

All of them will have three-year contracts, through which they will develop their work at cicCartuja, where they will perfect the skills acquired during their first postdoctoral stage.

We could not be happier that the emerging talent of such brilliant young researchers as those we have at the three institutes is being promoted and retained.
