NICER BIOFUELS, a strong commitment to the biofuels of the future

The Surface Chemistry and Catalysis group of the ICMS has obtained a highly relevant project for the production of biofuels in the latest call for proposals from the Ministry. It is a public-private collaboration, of the State Program of R&D&I oriented to the challenges of society, in the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2017-2020.

The project is called NICER BIOFUELS and has obtained ca. 900,000 euros for the development of pioneering technologies in the conversion of waste into biofuels for heavy transport.

Funded by the RETOS-COLABORACION PUBLICO-PRIVADA program of the Ministry of Science and Innovation with EU funds under the Next Generation Europe framework, NICER BIOFUELS is the result of the collaboration between the Universities of Zaragoza and Seville and the multinational URBASER.

Professor Jose A. Odriozola and Dr Tomas R. Reina from the Institute of Materials Science in Seville lead the group’s work, which focuses on the design of advanced heterogeneous catalysts with high selectivity to high energy density hydrocarbons for transport.

In the context of the circular economy and the development of sustainable fuels that allow decarbonizing transport and moving towards an emission-free society, NICER-BIOFUELS represents a step forward to combat climate change by combining fundamental science and applied engineering.
