Alberto Palmero, a CSIC senior scientist at the Institute of Materials Science in Seville, is organizing, together with Gonzalo García and Ramón Escobar (both also researchers in the area of Materials), the Symposium on Surface Science and Technologies (CyTeS) for sustainability and health challenges at the National Congress of Materials (CNMAT 2022), which this year will be held in Ciudad Real from June 28 to July 1.

Since 2009, Dr. Alberto Palmero has been leading a line of research within the “Nanotechnology in Surfaces and Plasma” group focused on the control of atomistic processes on surfaces to grow nanocolumnar porous thin films with applications in optics, sensor devices, microfluidics, etc. A key aspect of his research lies in the combination of atomistic simulations and the design of experiments under selected conditions to achieve greater nanostructural control and deposit materials on demand. Currently, he is leading the research project “Nucleation and Growth Processes on Acoustically Excited Piezoelectric Surfaces in Plasma/Vacuum Atmospheres”, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The symposium organized by the specialized group of the same name, CyTeS (Surface Science and Technologies), is presented with the aim of presenting the most recent advances in the science and technologies of surface treatment and modification, and their impact on social challenges of great current relevance such as Sustainability and Health. In particular, it is intended to collect basic and applied research of excellence that respond to challenges in the energy and renewable energy sector, machine tools and environmental protection, electronics, sensors and communications, as well as health, and that contribute to their sustainability. The studies and presentations of this symposium will bring to the Spanish scientific and industrial community the most recent advances in new thin film formulations, thermochemical modification, ion implantation, tribology, biosurfaces as well as micro and nano structuring processes of surfaces by laser or other techniques.
The main topics to be addressed include:
1. The relationship between surface processing conditions, microstructure and functional properties
2. Coatings with advanced properties (self-cleaning, wettability, smart coatings, thermal barriers, antifouling, bioactivity, antimicrobial, optical applications, etc.)
3. New coating concepts and designs (materials for high temperature applications and/or extreme conditions; energy production, conversion and storage; sensors; super capacitors; self-adaptive surfaces; self-lubricating surfaces; materials for food packaging…)
4. Design and manufacture of protective and decorative coatings
5. Biocompatible materials for health
6. Basic research on surface manufacturing and processing
7. Industrial surface functionalization systems
8. Manufacturing of nanoparticles and 3D structures
9. New manufacturing and surface functionalization routes
10. Nano modification and lithography of materials
11. Additive manufacturing and 3D printing of functional materials
12. Techniques Advanced in-situ and in-operando surface characterization
